Where Emerson is
Emerson is north-central Gary, the downtown blocks on the east side of Broadway. Its edges, as the city’s 2008 comprehensive plan draws them, are the Grand Calumet River, the Indiana Toll Road (I-90), 9th Place and Broadway. It was part of the original plat laid out by the Gary Land Company, and it holds City Hall, a sports complex and the city’s minor league ballpark, the U.S. Steel Yard, built in 2002.
Emerson has Toll Road access at Broadway, and U.S. 12 and U.S. 20 both run through it. A South Shore Line station is just across Broadway in Downtown West. Buffington Park, Idle Hour Park and most of Gateway Park sit on the Emerson side.
The housing is mixed: solid residential blocks on the east end, plenty of vacant lots nearer Broadway, and infill townhomes the city added between 5th and 6th Avenues around Vermont Street.
Pickup notes for Emerson
- Game and event days. Street parking near the U.S. Steel Yard fills up when there’s a game or an event. If that’s your block, tell us and we’ll time the pickup around it.
- Broadway and 5th Avenue. These are the busy commercial streets. A car on a side street or in a driveway is easier and safer to load.
- Townhomes and shared lots. For a car in a shared lot, let the lot’s owner or your association know a tow truck is coming.
- Cars on vacant lots. If the car is on a lot next door, tell us who owns the lot, and have your papers showing the car is yours.
Parts that make a difference
Cars that sit on the street for a long time can lose parts, and catalytic converters are a common target. If yours is missing, tell us and we price the car without it. We explain which parts matter and which don’t in what makes a junk car worth more than its weight.
No title? We can still help. Selling a junk car in Indiana takes the title or a BMV certificate of authority. A lost title can be replaced with a $15 BMV duplicate; the certificate costs $4, and you apply for it with proof of ownership like your current registration. Cars under 15 model years old legally need one or the other. Tell us which papers you have, bill of sale and insurance card included, and we’ll confirm the route when we call. Keep your license plate; Indiana’s BMV asks sellers to remove it at the time of sale.
Nearby
South, past the tracks and the 15th Avenue industrial belt, is Pulaski. The rest of the city is on Gary neighborhoods.

- What if there's a game at the ballpark on pickup day?

- Yes, if the car is yours. Let the lot's owner or your association know a tow truck is coming, and tell us where in the lot the car is parked.
